A Farmingdale High School and Stony Brook University graduate is President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to oversee the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and if confirmed, he’d replace another Long Island native. The nomination of Dr. Dave Weldon, a former Republican congressman from Florida, has provoked concern from public health experts. He sponsored a bill to limit the use of vaccines containing mercury because of concerns the mercury-based preservative thimerosal could cause autism despite the CDC’s and leading health experts’ insistence that it does not, and sponsored a 2007 bill to strip the CDC of vaccine-safety responsibilities and move it to another agency within the Department of Health and Human Services. He would replace Dr. Mandy Cohen, a Baldwin native who in a statement released by the CDC after vaccine critic Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s nomination for secretary of health and human services, but before Weldon’s, wrote: "I don't want to go backward and see children or adults suffer or lose their lives to remind us that vaccines work, and so I am concerned. Any misinformation coming from places of influence or power are concerning." K.C. Rondello, a clinical associate professor of public health at Adelphi University in Garden City, said in an email that he and others working in public health "are tremendously concerned about the potential impact of appointing a vaccine skeptic and conspiracy theorist to the role of CDC director. [Former] Rep. Weldon espouses beliefs that are contrary to the overwhelming mountain of evidence on vaccine efficacy and safety that has been garnered over decades." The CDC states that many studies have examined potential links between vaccines and autism and "continue to show that vaccines are not associated with ASD," or autism spectrum disorder. Children’s Health Defense, an organization that Kennedy founded, said in a statement: "We believe Dr. Weldon is eminently qualified as a former member of Congress and physician." The organization referred Newsday to an article on its website in which critics of the CDC praised Weldon for his criticism of the CDC’s vaccine safety oversight. Weldon was not available to comment, a Trump transition team spokeswoman said in an email. Weldon was born in Amityville, according to his official congressional biography , and graduated from Farmingdale High in 1971. He was among the first 16 Farmingdale alumni with their names inscribed on the school’s Wall of Honor, Newsday reported in 1998. He graduated from Stony Brook in 1978 with a bachelor of science in biochemistry, earning "high honors," university records show. He received his medical degree from the University at Buffalo in 1981. Weldon was a part-time clinical professor at the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida, from 2012 to 2019, and served on the university’s board of trustees from 2021 until January, the university said in an email. Weldon represented an east-central Florida congressional district from 1995 to 2009. His 2004 bill regarding thimerosal didn't pass. Thimerosal is added to vaccines to prevent germ growth and, according to the CDC , contains a type of mercury different than the one that is found in some fish. Studies have shown that low doses of thimerosal in vaccines are not harmful, other than minor reactions like redness at the injection site. Thimerosal was removed from childhood vaccines in 2001. It is in flu vaccines for adults and children, but there are thimerosal-free options. Weldon also has expressed concern about the safety of other vaccines, including those against measles, mumps and rubella, multiple news reports said. Dorit R. Reiss, a professor at University of California Law San Francisco and an expert on vaccine policy and law, said, "Weldon isn’t quite as extreme as Kennedy." But, she said, she is concerned that Weldon would push to no longer recommend certain vaccines and change CDC vaccine guidance. A committee of medical and public health experts, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices , advises the CDC on vaccines, but the CDC director can reject those recommendations, Reiss said. In addition, as health and human services secretary, Kennedy would have the power to appoint committee members. Recommendations are critical, because states generally follow them, she said. "Given the way this topic is politicized — which is a really sad thing, because viruses don't care about your politics — if the recommendations change suddenly, the reception would probably vary across states by political approach, and we may end up with a tragic national experiment in which some states stop recommending some vaccines and others don’t," Reiss said. In addition, the Affordable Care Act requires that most insurance plans pay for CDC-recommended vaccines if administered in-network. Many people won’t take vaccines if they must pay for them, Reiss said. "Some [insurance companies] will continue to cover vaccines that are not recommended because it's more cost effective for them to prevent disease than to treat it, but some won’t," she said. The CDC releases other advisories and recommendations. For example, the CDC website currently states that research shows that vaccines do not cause autism. If that changed, it could affect public trust in the CDC and put an official government stamp on baseless information, she said. I'M A Celebrity star Reverend Richard Coles has shared his hilarious nickname - after revealing a shock habit in camp. The radio presenter and writer, 62, is a fan favourite in this year's series. In tonight's episode, the Church of England priest admitted to having a surprising nickname. Richard told his co-stars how his friend Kev had coined him "farting Father Coles." Earlier, Oti Mabuse joked Danny Jones fanning smoke from the campfire would, in turn, make any farts waft away. This prompted Richard to ask whether the former Strictly pro was a farter. Oti replied: "You are, you fart in your sleep , all the time!" A laughing Richard then apologised - as he shared his moniker with the other campmates. Earlier in the episode, Richard took part in a Bushtucker Trial - featuring a major show twist. Ant and Dec revealed the remaining eight campmates had a chance to win a golden ticket to Celebrity Cyclone. In addition, they would also earn immunity from the next two public votes. Divided into two groups of four, Richard went up against GK Barry, Danny and Coleen Rooney. Named "The Arcade of Agony", each campmate had a claw machine with balls inside. Every ball contained tickets to put into the ticket deposit box. To even attempt using the machine, the celebs required coins, which were in a box filled with fish guts. Ant coached a struggling Richard, telling him: "Your technique's not great. You've really got to be over the top of the ball to grab it." Meanwhile, the usual stars to win meals for camp were up for grabs. i'm A Celebrity is back for its 24th series, with a batch of famous faces living in the Aussie jungle. Littler, who won the Grand Slam of Darts last week, hit checkouts of 170, 164 and 136 as he threatened to overturn an early deficit, but Humphries held his nerve to win the last three legs. “I’m really, really proud of that one to be honest,” Humphries told Sky Sports. He really drives me, makes me want to be a better player and I enjoy playing him. “He let me in really early in that first session to go 4-1 up, I never looked back and I’m proud that I didn’t take my foot off the gas. These big games are what I live for. “Luke is a special talent and he was right – I said to him I’ve got to get these (titles) early before he wins them all. “I’d love to be up here and hitting 105 averages like Luke is all the time but he’s a different calibre, he’s probably the best player in the world right now but there’s something about me that never gives up. “This is a great way to go into the worlds.” HUMPHRIES GOES BACK-TO-BACK! 🏆 Luke Humphries retains his Players Championship Finals title! I just can’t wait to go home, chill out, obviously practice at home for the worlds. That’s it now, leading up to the big one.”

The starts may not look like locks at first, but they should come through in Week 13. Conversely, I’ve included some players who might otherwise seem like safe plays to avoid as well. Quarterbacks Start: Sam Darnold, Vikings vs Cardinals Darnold had a rough patch a few weeks ago, but he’s back in good form, putting up five combined TDs in his past two games. Even against the Bears top-notch pass defense last week, Darnold threw for a season-high 330 yards to go along with his two scores. His opponent this week, the Cardinals, have a decent secondary, but they pale in comparison to Chicago’s. Other locks: —Jalen Hurts at Ravens —Baker Mayfield at Panthers —CJ Stroud at Jaguars —Justin Herbert at Falcons Avoid: Jared Goff, Lions vs Bears Goff doesn’t force the ball through the air if he doesn’t have to and he would be remiss to do so against a top rated Bears secondary that will be looking to vindicate themselves after giving up some big plays to Sam Darnold last week. He’s also got the best 1 and 2 punch in football in his backfield. Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery are a force and they’ll likely have a much easier time finding holes in Chicago’s run defense than Goff will in the passing game. Running backs Start: Chuba Hubbard, Panthers vs Buccaneers Hubbard fantasy owners were anxious last week, upon hearing the news that rookie running back Jonathon Brooks would be seeing his first game action this season. Fears were assuaged when Brooks only got two carries the entire game for 7 yards. Brooks’ carries could increase as he gets more comfortable in the offense, but Hubbard should have at least one more week as the starter in Carolina. It will come against a Buccaneers run defense that is a top-10 matchup for opposing runners in Week 13. Other locks: —Bucky Irving at Panthers —Jonathan Taylor at Patriots —Josh Jacobs vs Dolphins —Tyrone Tracy Jr., at Cowboys Avoid: James Conner, Cardinals at Vikings The Week 11 bye didn’t do Conner any favors as he only ran for 8 yards on seven carries in his Week 12 return. He was able to salvage his day through the air, catching five passes for 41 yards, but it was an underwhelming game from a fantasy perspective against the Seattle run defense. He’ll face a Vikings defense that ranks as a top-two run stopper going into Week 13 — Conner only gained 25 combined yards against Detroit’s top-three run defense in Week 2. Trey Benson is also gaining steam in the Arizona offense. It’s best to fade Conner this week, if you have that luxury. Wide receivers Start: DJ Moore, Bears at Lions Moore is finally starting to make waves again in fantasy, after slumping from Weeks 6 to 10. He’s had his best two-game stint of the season thus far in Weeks 11 and 12 though, going for a season-high 119 combined yards and a score in the latter game. New offensive coordinator Thomas Jones has sparked the offense and Moore has been a prime beneficiary. The Bears will have fits trying to run at the Lions’ stout run defense, so they could attack them through the air. Moore is a prime contender to keep up his recent run in Week 13. Other locks: —Ladd McConkey at Falcons —Puka Nacua at Saints —Jaxon Smith-Njigba at Jets —Jakobi Meyers at Chiefs Avoid: Quentin Johnston, Chargers vs Ravens Johnston is the definition of boom or bust, either scoring double-digit fantasy points or gaining fewer than 25 yards in nearly every game he’s appeared in this season. On “Monday Night Football,” he had zero catches on five targets. Johnston has a great matchup this week, but there’s no guarantee he’ll capitalize on it. Johnston is anything but a lock this week. Tight ends Start: Luke Schoonmaker, Cowboys vs Giants Schoonmaker had three catches for 55 yards and a score against Washington in a thrilling game. Schoonmaker provided another dependable option to QB Cooper Rush. Jake Ferguson is still in concussion protocol and it’s a short week as Dallas is playing on Thanksgiving, so Schoonmaker is likely to start once again. With CeeDee Lamb nursing nagging injuries as well, look for Rush to lean heavily on Schoonmaker this week. Other locks: —Jonnu Smith at Packers —Trey McBride at Vikings —Taysom Hill vs Rams —Dallas Goedert at Ravens Avoid: Sam LaPorta, Lions vs Bears LaPorta just can’t find any consistency in the Detroit offense, going weeks between decent fantasy outings at times. He had just three catches for 19 yards in Week 12 after missing Week 11 with a shoulder injury and things aren’t looking up for him this week as the Lions are playing a stalwart Chicago defense on short rest. Look for the Lions to go run heavy this week, taking the onus off LaPorta and the rest of the Lions receiving group. ___ This column was provided to The Associated Press by RosterWatch, .TWIN FALLS — It took time for College of Southern Idaho men’s basketball freshman Amarco Doyle to adjust to the United States. Time to adjust to a 17-hour time difference from his hometown of Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland, Australia. Time to adjust to being without his mom’s cooking, something no amount of Chipotle, Mo Bettah’s or Panda Express can replace. Time to adjust to the quickness and physicality of the game in the U.S. So far, Doyle looks like a quick adjuster on the court. Entering this weekend's Wright Physical Therapy Shootout, Doyle is averaging a team-high 17.1 points per game and his 8.1 rebounds per game rank second on the team. No. 21 CSI (7-2) will host Eastern Wyoming College at 7 p.m. Friday and Lane Community College (Oregon) at 7 p.m. Saturday. “He’s versatile,” CSI head coach Jeff Reinert told the Times-News . “He can handle it. He’s not a one dimensional type of player. He can step out and hit threes, he’s a good post up player. He plays the game the right way.” CSI’s Amarco Doyle dunks during the CSI Basketball Bash on Tuesday evening, Oct. 1, 2024, at CSI in Twin Falls. Doyle has averaged 17.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game in the Golden Eagles' first nine games this season. This year isn’t the first time Doyle has had to adjust. He moved around quite a bit for high school to try to find the best opportunity for his basketball career. Then he spent the past year playing for the Mackay Meteors in NBL1, a semi-pro league in South Australia that featured players 10 years his senior. Possibly his biggest adjustment though, came on the fly this summer. Doyle was set to attend NCAA Division II Seattle Pacific University but the NCAA blocked his amateurism certificate in July because he repeated 11th grade, Doyle told the Times-News . That meant he lost a year of eligibility, though he entered CSI as a freshman. He’s still not sure the number of years he has left, though is working with interested Division I schools to try to get three years so he can have the full four-year college experience. Reinert watched Doyle’s AAU team this summer when they played in Phoenix and Wichita, Kansas, but looked for point guard at the time. Reinert decided to take a flier when Doyle became available. Doyle had never been to Idaho before coming to CSI. So, he did his research on Twin Falls and realized it was like other places he had been in Australia. There isn’t a ton to do outside of basketball, but that helps him become a better player on the court. Plus he liked the sense of community at CSI, not just on the team but being in a place that cares about junior college basketball. “I was big on community,” Doyle told the Times-News . “The community here is amazing, they support us every game win or loss. We just hope to keep the crowd entertained and have an amazing season.” Doyle is comfortable playing on the wing or inside, with the ability to knock down 3-pointers or soar for dunks in transition. There’s a physicality to his game too, something he learned growing up playing Australian football and playing against grown men in NBL1. Even while being held back from practice this past week because of a knee injury, he still scored 20 points and nine rebounds against Western Nebraska on Friday night and 17 points against Northeastern Junior College on Saturday night. Doyle knew he was versatile when he came here, but is working to improve his ballhandling ability in his time at CSI. “The guards over here are a lot better, a lot quicker,” Doyle said. “Everyone’s handles one through four, even the five over here, their handles are amazing compared to back home where you could get away with it.” His teammates have picked up some of his Australian slang like “mates,” which means friend, and “heaps,” which means many. Doyle tried to introduce them to Vegemite, a popular spread back home, but they didn’t take. After hanging out with teammates all day, he spends night time talking to his family and friends back home on WhatsApp or Messenger. It’s a routine Doyle will likely continue for the next few years as he continues his basketball career in the U.S. He already has offers from Oakland and Weber State. Reinert expects him to commit before the year is over. Reinert isn’t complaining though. In his ideal world, everyone would leave after one year because he’s done his job. But until then he’ll be happy to have Doyle as part of a deep team chasing an NJCAA National Tournament appearance and more after missing out last season. “The pieces are there,” Reinert said. “The main pieces are there and if everyone buys into the role, we can do a lot of things.” Your story lives in the Magic Valley, and our new mobile app is designed to make sure you don’t miss breaking news, the latest scores, the weather forecast and more. Under fire health secretary Neil Gray told to 'come clean' after it emerged he took an official limo to movie bash He has already faced scrutiny over his use of the limo to attend football games Click here to visit the Scotland home page for the latest news and sport By TOM GORDON DEPUTY SCOTTISH POLITICAL EDITOR Published: 14:51 EST, 26 November 2024 | Updated: 14:51 EST, 26 November 2024 e-mail View comments Neil Gray has been told to ‘come clean’ about why he took an official limo to and from a film premiere after it emerged the SNP’s Culture Secretary attended the glitzy bash as well. The Scottish Tories have said the Health Secretary’s claim that he went to the star-studded event on ‘ministerial duties’ beggared belief given Angus Robertson - who holds the culture brief - was already there. Deputy Tory leader Rachael Hamilton said it appeared Mr Gray was simply ‘on a jolly’. The Mail previously revealed that Mr Gray - also under fire for taking ministerial cars to football games - was chauffeured to the opening night of the Edinburgh Film Festival. He and wife Karlie posed for photographs at the Cameo cinema on August 15 when it staged the UK premiere of The Outrun, which Mr Gray previously said he ‘cannot wait to see’. Neil Gray and his wife Karlie attended the opening gala world premiere of "The Outrun" during the Edinburgh International Festival in August Mr Gray attended the glitzy bash despite the fact culture secretary Angus Robertson was already at the premiere, with critics saying Mr Gray appeared to have simply been 'on a jolly' Official records state Mr Gray met representatives of film quango Screen Scotland at a ‘reception’ and discussed ‘culture’, even though it is not part of his health brief. They also say that Mr Gray was chauffeured from his office at St Andrews House to a ‘personal address’ and from there to the cinema. The Government last night refused to say if Mr Gray was driven home to pick up his wife before they attended the premiere together. The Tories said he appeared to have been acting more like a film fan - again at taxpayers’ expense. Ms Hamilton said: ‘Neil Gray needs to come clean on why he thought it was appropriate for him to attend this event. ‘Given Angus Robertson as Culture Secretary was already at the premiere, the Health Secretary appears to have simply been on a jolly. ‘His continued defence of using the ministerial limo to enjoy his favourite hobbies beggars belief. ‘Neil Gray has taken the taxpayer for a ride far too often. He must be upfront about these trips - including whether a family member was driven to and from the film premiere - otherwise the scandal engulfing him rightly won’t go away.’ The Airdrie and Shotts MSP took family members and a guest to five of the eight football matches he was recently criticised for attending. The Government said Mr Gray was undertaking ‘ministerial duties’ and it was not unusual for ministers to attend sporting and cultural events. But Mr Robertson’s presence at the premiere arguably made Mr Gray superfluous. The Culture Secretary met the film’s star, Saoirse Ronan, as well as the Film Festival’s director Paul Ridd and its chair Andrew McDonald. Mr Gray has faced intense scrutiny for being driven to football matches in an official limo Unlike Mr Gray, he was driven directly from St Andrews House to the cinema, not via any personal address. Mr Gray was accused earlier this month of using taxpayer-funded cars to indulge his love of football after being driven to eight games, half involving his favourite team, Aberdeen. He apologised to parliament for having ‘given the impression of acting more as a fan and less as a minister’. In December, Mr Gray took to social media to promote The Outrun - which is set in Orkney, where he grew up - saying ‘Cannot wait to see this!’ and ‘Cannot wait!’ The Government refused to say if Mr Gray’s wife also used the limo to and from the premiere or why Mr Gray needed to attend when Mr Robertson was already there. A spokeswoman said: ‘Ministers attend sporting and cultural events as part of their Ministerial duties.’ The Film Festival declined to comment. White House says at least 8 US telecom firms, dozens of nations impacted by China hacking campaignThe Winter Session of Parliament concluded with disappointing productivity figures, reflecting an alarming trend in legislative functioning. The Lok Sabha recorded just 58% productivity, while the Rajya Sabha fared worse at 40.03%. These figures signify a serious lapse in the effective use of parliamentary time, raising concerns about the growing discord that overshadows crucial governance responsibilities. Parliament is the cornerstone of democracy, meant to deliberate on policies and address the concerns of its citizens. Unfortunately, this session was marred by animosity and protests, with both the ruling NDA and the opposition equally culpable. The session’s highlights-two landmark bills on simultaneous elections and the robust debate on the Constitution’s 75-year journey-were overshadowed by unseemly incidents, including Thursday’s physical altercation and a police case involving MPs. Focusing on political grandstanding rather than legislative work is a betrayal of public trust. Parliamentary discourse should prioritise the nation’s pressing issues, from economic policies to social welfare measures. Instead, sessions devolve into verbal sparring, disruptions, and adjournments. The stark contrast between the potential for constructive debates and the actual outcome of this session is disheartening. The responsibility lies with all stakeholders. Opposition parties must recognise that sustained protests and walkouts, though sometimes necessary, cannot replace the need for active participation in discussions. Simultaneously, the ruling party must foster an environment of dialogue rather than confrontation, addressing concerns raised by the opposition with transparency. The crux of the issue lies in the erosion of respect for parliamentary norms. India’s pressing challenges-economic recovery, employment generation, and social justice-demand attention. The time lost in this session is a loss to the citizens who look to their elected representatives for solutions. Returning to productive functioning requires introspection, collaboration, and a commitment to restoring Parliament’s sanctity. The upcoming sessions offer another opportunity for the government and opposition to set aside differences and prioritise the nation’s agenda. Anything less would be an abdication of their democratic responsibilities.
Texans look to regroup as they prepare for Ravens after Tank Dell suffers another injury
Luke Humphries retained his Players Championship title in Minehead by beating Luke Littler on Sunday night then showed his class by admitting: "He's the best in the world and he makes me a better player." The latest edition of the pair's friendly, but intense, rivalry saw the world No.1 come out on top 11-7 for his third successive triumph over 'The Nuke' who he also defeated in last year's World Championship final. Littler had been looking to make it back-to-back TV ranking titles after triumphing at the Grand Slam of Darts last weekend. But despite seeing off Ross Smith and Mike De Decker on finals day, it was Humphries who won the final to bank the £120,000 prize money. It sets the scene for the Worlds at Ally Pally next month in which it is expected these two will go head-to-head again. And 'Cool Hand' was total class after his victory here as he hailed Littler for the influence the teenager has had on him and his game. Humphries said to ITV Sport: "This trophy was in my living room a couple of months ago and now I've got it back! I'm really, really proud of that one to be honest. I didn't feel myself this week, playing-wise, I felt like I was a dart behind in a lot of the scenarios. "There's something that Luke does to you, he really drives me. He makes me want to be a better player. I enjoy playing him. He let me in really early in that first session to go 4-1 up but I never looked back. "I'm proud the way I didn't take my foot off the gas like I have this whole weekend. A lot of the games, I've taken my foot off the gas and allowed people to come back at me. I was very fortunate against Dirk [van Duijvenbode], I rode my luck, but I got into the final and was in my comfort zone. "These big games are what I live for and what I dream of, being a major champion, this is what I do it all for. I travel the world for these moments. Really, really pleased. "A special moment to Luke, a fantastic game again, them finishes were unbelievable. He's just a special talent. He's right, I said to him 'I've got to get these early before it's na-nights and I don't win any.' So I'm really, really pleased to beat him there." Humphries is the world champion and world No.1 with this his fourth PDC title of 2024 but he says Littler, who doesn't even turn 18 until January 21, is the best in the game right now. The Newbury-born thrower added: "It is satisfying. I'd love to be up here hitting 105 averages like Luke is all the time but he's a different calibre. He's probably the best player in the world right now. If you go by stats, he's easily the best player in the world. But there's something about me that never gives up. "As much as he is the best, I know I can beat him, he knows he can beat me. So this is a great way to go the Worlds now. A lot of people probably thought Luke was going to win this one and the Worlds. "We like unpredictability in darts and that's what we've got in the last few months. Now, we've got that in the Worlds, who's going to win - me or Luke? Or is it going to be someone else? We'll have to find out! "I said to Luke, there's a lot of pressure on our shoulders. Everyone expected a 110-average game there. But it's hard to do it after a long day. When you're playing the best in the world, and he's playing one of the best in the world, it's hard to perform and be at that 110 average. "I thought it was a decent game after the first five or six games. We're two players now that have to go on. He's made me a bit hungrier to try a bit harder to practice more and work out. "If no one sticks with him, he's going to win everything. Maybe I'm that guy that can stick with him and have a good run over the next 5-10 years. "There's something that Luke does to you, he makes you wanna be a better player!" ??????️ "I believe we're the two best players in the world!" ?????? @lukeh180 ?????? | @OfficialPDC pic.twitter.com/9QJo20Wp0K "I do believe we're the two best players in the world and I'm going to have to keep working hard to keep up with him." Runner-up Littler said: "It was tough, I missed a few doubles. Luke could've been 5-0 up, I could've been. If you don't take your chances early on, it's a lot to come back. I hit the 170 and the 164 but I just didn't have enough in the end. "It's just like Luke said, he needs to take advantage before I start winning them. I don't blame him! Sound. It's been a good past two weeks. "I can't wait to go home, chill out and obviously practice at home for the Worlds. That's it now, leading up to the big one. "We always produce our best against each other. But like I said that first session, I didn't have enough to get it back and Luke took full advantage. So fair enough to him."White House says at least 8 US telecom firms, dozens of nations impacted by China hacking campaign

Real Madrid suffered a 2-1 LaLiga defeat at Athletic Bilbao as Kylian Mbappe missed from the penalty spot again. Alex Berenguer prodded the hosts ahead after 53 minutes before Mbappe – who failed to convert a Champions League penalty against Liverpool last week – sent his kick too close to Bilbao goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala. Read unlimited articles for free today: Already have an account? Manitoba’s acting education minister defended the province against criticism it takes an opaque approach to child-care oversight during question period Monday. The matter was raised by Carrie Hiebert, MLA for Morden-Winkler and families critic, citing a highlighting the lack of transparency around “trackers” the province uses when child-care centres are not meeting “key standards” or have “serious issues.” “The NDP like to talk a big game about transparency. However, if you ask them to actually be transparent, you get silence, vague future dates and spokespersons,” Hiebert said during question period. “Why is this minister taking a secretive approach to the oversight of child-care facilities, as described by the media?” In response, acting Education Minister Tracy Schmidt said: “There is no issue with transparency on this side of the house.” The use of such trackers was discovered through a freedom of information request seeking insight into why the province said it would take more than 8,000 hours to compile and share child-care inspection reports. Internal emails shared in response to the access request suggested that the Department of Education and Early Childhood Learning uses the trackers to keeps tabs on facilities not in full compliance with standards, though staff continued to say it would be too labour-intensive to share all inspection reports. Asked earlier this month how many how many centres are on the lists, a provincial spokesperson would not say. Critics say this is part of a pattern of secrecy and poor record keeping that includes the department not making public inspection reports from child-care centres or knowing how many facilities have temporary “provisional” licences, issues raised during a investigation into the state of child care in Manitoba earlier this year. “Parents deserve better, children deserve better and child-care staff deserve better,” Hiebert said. She said the province refuses to say if it will stop “hiding” the list of facilities with deficiencies and asked if it will commit to making child-care inspection reports public. Schmidt did not answer the question. “The suggestion that we are being anything but transparent is absolutely false,” Schmidt said. “That being said, we are absolutely happy to work with families, to work with the sector, to ensure that if there are deficiencies, that they will absolutely be addressed.” Currently, if the member of the public wishes to access a child-care inspection report, they can request it from the individual facility, but the facility is not required to share it. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. In cases where a facility is not meeting standards as set out by the province, including child-to-staff ratios, criminal record checks, and health and safety requirements, these issues are are noted on the facility’s provisional licence, which is posted online. However, no details are provided and the issues are listed in regulatory jargon making it difficult to understand what the problem is and how it is being addressed. Other provinces share detailed information about child-care inspections including why the inspection took place, what issues were uncovered and how serious the deficiencies are. In Manitoba, if serious issues arise, such as a child left alone for a period of time, it can result in a licensing order issued by the director of the early learning and child-care program. Details of these orders are made public and posted on the province’s website. The asked again Monday if the province will share the number of facilities and names of facilities on its tracking lists or make inspection reports public. A provincial spokesperson did not answer the questions but noted that licensing orders past and present are posted online. “Disclosure of this type of information is amongst the most proactive and transparent in Canada,” the spokesperson said. katrina.clarke@freepress.mb.ca Katrina Clarke is an investigative reporter at the . By Greg Otto December 4, 2024 A White House official says the Salt Typhoon hack has impacted eight telecom companies in the United States, with dozens of other countries also affected, and has been in motion for as long as two years. The information comes as U.S. administration officials said earlier this week that the hacking group, linked to the Chinese government, is still believed to be in U.S. telecom networks . The government began investigating the breach this past spring, and are continuing to assess its full scope. The spying efforts targeted officials from both presidential campaigns, including the phone of President-elect Donald Trump . Anne Neuberger, the White House’s deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technology, said Wednesday the Chinese campaign “has affected dozens of countries around the world.” She also reiterated what other government officials said earlier this week: the attackers are most likely still inside the telecom networks. “There is a risk of ongoing compromises to communications,” Neuberger said. “Until U.S. companies address cybersecurity gaps, the Chinese are likely to maintain their access.” Administration officials did not reveal the full list of companies impacted, nor did they share the countries that may have been affected. However, the White House noted that Chinese cyberespionage efforts have been discovered in the past few years targeting Europe and the Indo-Pacific region. Neuberger said a unified coordination group was established in response to the hack, which meets several times a week. President Joe Biden has been briefed multiple times on the situation. She also emphasized that the targets were among a handful of prominent government and political officials, but the attack “was broad in terms of potential access to communications of everyday Americans.” The White House also believes classified communications were unaffected. The impacted telecommunications companies are currently working to expel the hackers from their networks, but Neuberger said the risk of further breaches remains high until these cybersecurity gaps are fully addressed. The administration has recently convened discussions with telecommunications CEOs and cybersecurity experts to reinforce security measures across the sector. Earlier this week, a host of agencies released communication infrastructure-focused guidance . The agencies responsible were CISA, the National Security Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Australian Signals Directorate’s Australian Cyber Security Centre, the Canadian Cyber Security Centre and New Zealand’s National Cyber Security Centre.1. There are MANY fans in the reviews, including some who say they can SEE the debris coming out of their faces. Oh! Anddd reviewers say they use this as a step in their double cleansing routine. What the heck is that, you may ask? Well, double cleansing is a method of cleansing your face twice — first with an oil-based cleanser, and then again with a water-based cleanser to help get all the gross stuff out of your pores. Promising review: "This is my first time ordering an oil-based cleanser and I’m so glad I purchased this one. I originally saw this product on TikTok and wanted to see what the hype was all about. After using the cleanser on my dry face for 2–3 minutes, I could see my white- and blackheads on my fingers. I was a little hesitant to try oil cleansing because I have acne-prone skin, however, my face has never looked better. After each use, my face is as soft as a baby's bottom and my scarring doesn’t look as deep! The cleanser has a light clean scent. Not super strong! I am currently pairing this cleanser with the Anua heartleaf soothing toner to achieve glass skin. #glassskinera" — Myshel Cagle Get it from Amazon for $17.69 . 26. And check 'em out on TikTok ! BuzzFeed Shopping contributor Jordan Grigsby is a huge fan: "Okay, so, who's gonna tell me this isn't my hair? I am OBSESSED with these tape-in extensions. I *just* got them professionally installed for my birthday last week and they are simply perfection. So so versatile! I'm a clip-in girly but I got these and even though it's 98 degrees (no Nick Lachey) outside in Maryland, I could not wait for fall to put them in. These are so so freakin' beautiful, seamless, and it looks like it's growing out of my scalp. I do recommend that if you have curly hair, get the curly ones for summer! I have to take these out next week because the tape-ins are straight (I'm kicking myself for not getting the curly ones), my hair is naturally curly, I'm sweating bullets, and I wanna go to the pool without having curly hair and bone straight extensions after. So I sadly have to take 'em out early, but please believe when the temperatures drop in October, these are going right back in my head for all of fall and winter. I only want to use tape-ins from now on, clip-ins are lovely, but these?! Top tier. I used about two and a half packs for my thick hair which TOTALLY shocked me (I got four packs cuz I thought I'd need more). If you like extensions, I highly suggest trying these out!" Check out a TikTok of the heating pad in action. Reviewers note you should definitely wear it *over* your clothes! Promising review : "Oh my god. This might be the best thing I have ever bought. It gets so incredibly warm. You do need to wear it over clothes to prevent burns but as someone who never finds any heat pack warm enough the lowest setting is exceptionally hot. As someone who has really bad menstrual cramps and chronic constipation this little belt does it all. The heat is so soothing and adjustable and heats up so fast . The vibration is my favorite part. It helps so much with trapped gas and bloating pains. It breaks up all the little bubbles and can even move things along if you’re having a hard time using the bathroom. The various patterns and heat combinations allow this to be truly customizable to however you feel at the time and it’s fantastic. I love this moka pot more than any other item in my kitchen other than my actual coffee pot brewer! I had bought a cheap one elsewhere and that lasted about three weeks before falling apart. I spent a little more money for a quality product and have never looked back! I recommend this particular moka pot as it was slightly more than the cheap ones but less than some of the bigger name brands. Promising review : "This specific printer is lightweight but very sturdy. The app is super easy to use ; it's got a media library that has layouts and other clipart styles. The printer is also relatively quiet and I have not had any issues with loading the paper straight, you just have to be dedicated to inserting the paper. Do not be super gentle with the paper or it will print on the paper crooked. Customer support is awesome and the quality if nice and worth the price, in my opinion. Our front walkway gets pretty dark at night, and I was frustrated with trying to remember to turn on the light every evening and off every morning. I looked into those light sensors you can plug in, but our front porch light is under an awning with enough shade that it would have kept the light on 24/7. This little Switchbot solved the problem . They came near but didn’t bite. The smell isn’t bad either! I didn’t mind it, and my sister has requested some also (she gets bitten even more than I do). Promising review: "This thing is amazing, how did I survive before??!!?! My 32-oz metal water bottle had a cozy lil' seat next to me on the passenger side for years. But then my boyfriend came along and stole her seat, so my poor water bottle would roll around in the back seat and knock into stuff while I was driving. Me and her go way back dude, so I'm glad I found a way to keep my manz and my trusty (knock off) hydroflask. He was gonna have to go tbh, gotta hydrate! (kidding, he's great too). I have a 2005 VW Jetta with the wimpiest cup holders, and this fits great. Could fit so many sizes and depths though — if you're worried about fit, don't be. This thing is super adjustable. I've had absolutely no problems with it wiggling or anything so far, despite the shallowness of my original cup"holders". On Monday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends,” New York City Councilman Robert Holden (D) stated that he loves that incoming Border Czar Tom Homan vowed to hold sanctuary jurisdictions accountable for “shielding criminals and terrorists” because “We need to actually get rid of and deport these illegal aliens who are committing crime.” Holden said, “I love Tom Homan, the new Border Czar, who came, last week on Fox and said, we’re going to hold these mayors and governors accountable, certainly, he said don’t cross that line. Because they are violating, with these sanctuary city laws, by shielding — they are violating, it’s a felony to shield these criminals, these illegal immigrants. So, we need to start really doing that. We need to actually get rid of and deport these illegal aliens who are committing crime.” He added that “the governors — Democratic governors and the mayors of these sanctuary cities are shielding criminals and terrorists, Brian.” Holden further stated that he’s looking to President-Elect Donald Trump, who “could say, you know what, if you’re not going — if you’re going to violate the laws, the federal laws, statutes that we have on the books, it’s a felony to shield and harbor illegal aliens who have committed crimes. ... So, the President, actually, could say to the governor and to the mayor, cooperate with us, or we’re going to charge you with felonies.” Follow Ian Hanchett on Twitter @IanHanchettThe Winter Session of Parliament concluded with disappointing productivity figures, reflecting an alarming trend in legislative functioning. In today's Daily Fix:CD Project's long-in-development The Witcher 4 game is now in "full-scale production," which the company has described as the most intense phase of game development.
