Chandigarh: The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) on Tuesday said the adjudicating authority had confirmed attachment of properties worth Rs 36.52 crore linked to former Congress MLA from Samalkha seat Dharam Singh Chhokar and his son, Vikas Chhokar . ED said the assets had been attached as the duo continue to elude arrest in a money-laundering case filed against Chhokar’s other son, Sikander Singh, in May this year. In another development, a Gurugram court has also taken cognisance of a fresh case made out against Sikandar last week. Both Chhokar and Vikas have not joined the probe. Even efforts by the agency and local police to apprehend them have failed. ED, while referring to the investigation, claimed to have detected siphoning of funds worth crores by companies linked to Chhokar through fake bills or diversion of funds for personal use. ED investigation revealed that M/s Mahira Infatech Pvt Ltd siphoned homebuyers’ money by booking fake construction expenditure in group entities and making unrelated personal expenses, such as buying jewellery and wedding expenses. Cash equivalent to fake purchases was received back from entities providing fake bills/invoices by the directors/promoters of Mahira Group, which was used for personal gains. Directors also diverted homebuyers’ money to other group entities as loans, outstanding for years, for personal gains. In May, ED arrested Sikandar in a PMLA case. On June 26, ED filed a prosecution complaint (chargesheet) in the special court for PMLA cases in Gurgaon against Sikandar, his company Mahira Infratech, D S Home Construction Pvt Ltd, and others under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. The PMLA court took cognisance of the chargesheet on Dec 5 to resume the trial of Sikandar. Mahira Infatech, Czar Buildwell Pvt Ltd, and Mahira Buildtech Pvt Ltd collected Rs 616.41 crore from thousands of homebuyers under affordable housing scheme, on the promise of providing houses at sectors 68, 103, and 104 in Gurgaon, but failed to deliver them and missed deadlines, diverting the money collected from the homebuyers for personal use. We also published the following articles recently PMLA court frames charges against ex-minister, 11 others in money laundering case A Ranchi court charged former minister Alamgir Alam and 11 others with money laundering in a rural development tender scam. Jharkhand HC exempts Soren from personal appearance in court in 'money laundering' case Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has been granted temporary relief from personal appearance before a Ranchi court in a money laundering case. But, more than a year later, that hasn’t stopped people from trying to make “Glicked” — or even “Babyratu” — happen. The counterprogramming of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” in July 2023 hit a nerve culturally and had the receipts to back it up. Unlike so many things that begin as memes, it transcended its online beginnings. Instead of an either-or, the two movies ultimately complemented and boosted one another at the box office. This combination of images shows promotional art for "Gladiator II," left, and "Wicked." And ever since, moviegoers, marketers and meme makers have been trying to recreate that moment, searching the movie release schedule for odd mashups and sending candidates off into the social media void. Most attempts have fizzled (sorry, “Saw Patrol” ). People are also reading... Movie review: 'Wicked' is designed to wow and wow again BRUCE R. MILLER “'Glicked' rolls off the tongue a little bit more,” actor Fred Hechinger said at the New York screening of “Gladiator II” this week. “I think we should all band around ‘Glicked.’ It gets too confusing if you have four or five different names for it.” As with “Barbenheimer," as reductive as it might seem, “Glicked” also has the male/female divide that make the fan art extra silly. One is pink and bright and awash in sparkles, tulle, Broadway bangers and brand tie-ins; The other is all sweat and sand, blood and bulging muscles. Both films topped Fandango’s most anticipated holiday movie survey, where 65% of respondents said that they were interested in the “Glicked” double feature. Theaters big and small are also pulling out the stops with movie-themed tie-ins. B&B Theaters will have Roman guards tearing tickets at some locations and Maximus popcorn tubs. Marcus Theaters is doing Oz photo ops and friendship bracelet-making. Alamo Drafthouse is leaning into the singalong aspect (beware, though, not all theaters are embracing this) and the punny drinks like “Defying Gravi-Tea.” This image released by Universal Pictures shows Cynthia Erivo, left, and Ariana Grande in a scene from the film "Wicked." “Rather than it being in competition, I think they’re in conversation,” “Gladiator II” star Paul Mescal said. “This industry needs a shot in the arm. Those films gave it last year. We hope to do it this year.” And the hope is that audiences will flock to theaters to be part of this moment as well. It's a sorely needed influx of could-be blockbusters into a marketplace that's still at an 11% deficit from last year and down 27.2% from 2019, according to data from Comscore. “Competition is good for the marketplace. It’s good for consumers,” said Michael O'Leary, the president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners. “Having two great movies coming out at the same time is simply a multiplier effect.” “Glicked” is currently tracking for a combined North American debut in the $165 million range, with “Wicked” forecast to earn around $100 million (up from the $80 million estimates a few weeks ago) and “Gladiator II” pegged for the $65 million range. “Barbenheimer” shattered its projections last July. Going into that weekend, “Barbie” had been pegged for $90 million and “Oppenheimer” around $40 million. Ultimately, they brought in a combined $244 million in that first outing, and nearly $2.4 billion by the end of their runs. It’s possible “Glicked” will exceed expectations, too. And it has the advantage of another behemoth coming close behind: “Moana 2,” which opens just five days later on the Wednesday before the Thanksgiving holiday. “Glickedana” triple feature anyone? This image released by Paramount Pictures shows Pedro Pascal, left, and Paul Mescal in a scene from "Gladiator II." “These are 10 important days,” O'Leary said. “It’s going to show the moviegoing audience that there’s a lot of compelling stuff out there for them to see.” There are infinite caveats to the imperfect comparison to “Barbenheimer,” as well. “Wicked” is a “Part One.” Musicals carry their own baggage with moviegoers, even those based on wildly successful productions (ahem, “Cats”). “Gladiator II” got a head start and opened internationally last weekend. In fact, in the U.K. it played alongside “Paddington in Peru,” where that double was pegged “Gladdington.” “Gladiator” reviews, while positive, are a little more divided than the others. And neither directors Ridley Scott nor Jon M. Chu has the built-in box office cache that Christopher Nolan’s name alone carries at the moment. The new films also cost more than “Barbie” ($145 million) and “Oppenheimer” ($100 million). According to reports, “Gladiator II” had a $250 million price tag; “Wicked” reportedly cost $150 million to produce (and that does not include the cost of the second film, due next year). The narrative, though, has shifted away from “who will win the weekend.” Earlier this year, Chu told The Associated Press that he loves that this is a moment where “we can root for all movies all the time.” Close behind are a bevy of Christmas releases with double feature potential, but those feel a little more niche. There’s the remake of “Nosferatu,” the Nicole Kidman kink pic “Babygirl” and the Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown.” The internet can’t even seem to decide on its angle for that batch of contenders, and none exactly screams blockbuster. Sometimes the joy is just in the game, however. Some are sticking with the one-name mashup (“Babyratu”); others are suggesting that the fact that two of the movies feature real-life exes (Timothée Chalamet and Lily-Rose Depp) is enough reason for a double feature. And getting people talking is half the battle. When in doubt, or lacking a catchy name, there’s always the default: “This is my Barbenheimer.” Associated Press journalist John Carucci and Film Writer Jake Coyle contributed reporting. No. 1 South Carolina women stunned by fifth-ranked UCLA 77-62, ending Gamecocks' 43-game win streakTexas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham spoke to Fox News Digital about the offer to the president-elect. Incoming border czar Tom Homan says he is already making plans to use more than 1,400 acres of land being offered to the next Trump administration to stage its mass deportation operation . Fox News Digital first reported last month that Texas has offered the administration land in Starr County, which the state purchased from a ranch owner in October. The 1,402 acres are in the Rio Grande Valley sector near the border. Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham said her office was "fully prepared" to enter into an agreement with the Department of Homeland Security to "allow a facility to be built for the processing, detention, and coordination of the largest deportation of violent criminals in the nation’s history." In remarks on "Dr. Phil Primetime," Homan accepted the offer and said he was already making plans for the land. ‘100% ON BOARD:' BORDER STATE OFFERS TRUMP MASSIVE PLOT OF LAND TO AID MASS DEPORTATION OPERATION This image shows drone footage from a ranch in Starr County. (Texas General Land Office) "I’m writing the plan as we speak, I was working on it last night as a matter of fact," he said. He praised Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s administration for his efforts to secure the border. The state has built its own border wall, including starting construction in the area in Starr County. Homan said migrants would be moving in and out of the area before they can be put on deportation flights. ‘SHUT IT DOWN’: RED STATE MAKES MASSIVE LAND BUY TO RAMP UP BORDER WALL EFFORTS AMID MIGRANT SURGE "This 1,400 acres of land, that saves us from acquiring the land. The government never buys things fast and when we do, we overpay for it, so having this from the state of Texas is great," he said,. In a statement to Fox News Digital on Tuesday, Buckingham said she was looking forward to taking the next steps with the land. Thomas Homan was announced as President-elect Trump's pick to oversee the incoming administration's deportation operations. (Reuters) "For far too long, Texans and Americans have suffered from Biden’s broken border policies. I am looking forward to working with the newly appointed Border Czar, Tom Homan, in ridding our communities of violent, illegal criminals who are hurting our sons and daughters and anticipate discussing the next steps on January 21, 2025," she said. "As Texas Land Commissioner, it has been my promise to all Texans to do everything in my purview to gain complete operational control of our southern border. It’s my hope that the leasing of this land will be able to aid the incoming Trump Administration in keeping our American families safe," she said. Truth Social, the social media platform owned by President-elect Donald Trump, appears to be exploring a move into the crypto space. Trump Media & Technology Group filed a trademark application earlier this week for TruthFi, which it described as a cryptocurrency payment processing platform. The trademark application includes few specifics but lists numerous potential applications for TruthFi, including card payment processing services, asset management, custody service and trading in digital assets. It’s not clear how far along Trump Media is in evaluating a crypto payment service or whether the Trump-owned public company will ultimately launch such a platform. A move into crypto could be a way to diversify beyond social media. Trump Media did not respond to a request for comment. The trademark application illustrates the thorny conflict-of-interest issues raised by Trump’s election victory and his sprawling business empire. Trump and his family members own businesses that stand to gain from crucial decisions his administration will make, including on federal regulation. “It’s a huge problem but it’s not a Trump specific problem,” said Richard Painter, the top ethics lawyer in the George W. Bush administration. “Just like it’s a huge problem that members of Congress are trading crypto while they fail to pass legislation regulating crypto and accept huge amounts of donations from the crypto industry. Painter, who is a law professor at the University of Minnesota, said that criminal conflict of interest laws do not apply to the president, vice president of members of Congress. Still, he said Trump should clearly take steps to address the ethical challenges posed by his financial interests. “President Trump ought to do what every other president has done: Divest personal assets, Trump Organization assets, everything that creates a conflict of interest with his official duties. And that includes Truth Social and crypto,” Painter said. The news about the trademark comes just weeks after Trump’s election victory, a win powered in part by strong support from a crypto industry desperate for friendlier regulation from Washington. Soon, Trump will be able to return the favor – while potentially profiting from the crypto boom his election has helped turbocharge. Trump, who once bashed bitcoin but has since embraced it, promised during the campaign to make the United States the “crypto capital of the planet” and create a national cryptocurrency reserve. When he takes power in January, Trump is widely expected to tap regulators who will boost the crypto industry, moves that could help the company he owns a dominant stake in. Trump had vowed to replace one of the crypto industry’s biggest enemies: Gary Gensler, the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Gensler announced Thursday he will step down on January 20 when Trump is inaugurated. Analysts anticipate Trump will pick a crypto-friendly SEC chair. The trademark application for a crypto payment service comes just days after the Financial Times reported that Trump Media is in advanced talks to acquire crypto trading platform Bakkt. That report sent shares of Bakkt skyrocketing more than 160%. Bakkt issued a statement on Tuesday saying it was “aware of the rumors” that appeared in the media about a potential deal but it does not “comment on market rumors or speculation.” Beyond the potential Trump Media move into crypto payments, Trump has numerous other crypto ventures, including a business launched in September called World Liberty Financial. Earlier this week, Trump selected Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick to run the Commerce Department. Lutnick has become a prominent cheerleader for cryptocurrency firm Tether , which has been hit by investor concerns about its operations.

Wayanad(Kerala), Nov 23 (PTI) Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday scored her maiden electoral victory from the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala with a huge margin of over 4.1 lakh votes to retain the hill constituency, won by her brother Rahul Gandhi in the LS polls earlier this year. While BJP candidate Navya Haridas attributed Priyanka’s win to the “long political tradition” in the constituency of supporting the Congress, CPI(M)-led LDF’s Sathyan Mokeri claimed it was due to “the focus on Gandhi family’s sacrifices” like the killings of Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi to evoke the people’s sentiments. Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan congratulated the winners of the Wayanad LS and Palakkad and Chelakkara assembly bypolls. Priyanka got 6,22,338 votes which was 4,10,931 votes more than Mokeri’s tally of 2,11,407. Mokeri’s tally was also more than 70,000 votes less than what CPI’s Annie Raja got in the 2024 LS polls in April this year in Wayanad. She had secured 2,83,023 votes. The Left veteran said that the LDF and its constituent parties will examine the reasons behind the reduction in the votes received by the front. “The Left front and its parties will also examine whether a decline in the voter turnout also resulted in the drop in LDF votes,” he added. The LS poll turnout in Wayanad, which has over 14 lakh registered voters, was close to 74 per cent in April, but had declined to 65 per cent in the by-election in November. Mokeri said that the LDF bypoll campaign was carried out very efficiently in the hill constituency, but that is when the Congress raised the “emotional and sensitive issues”. He said that the entire Congress leadership camped out in Wayanad and their strategy was to not focus on developmental issues and politics and instead to “highlight the traditions and sacrifices of the Nehru family to sway the emotions of the people”. “They (Congress) focused upon the sacrifices of the Gandhi family, including the martyrdom of Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi to create an emotional image of Priyanka in the minds of the people and evoke their sentiments for her,” Mokeri told media here after the results were declared. Haridas, who came third with 1,09,939 votes which was around 32,000 less than K Surendran’s tally of 1,41,045 votes in the April LS polls in Wayanad, said that she “accepts” her defeat in the bypoll. She contended that while the BJP focused on developmental issues and needs of the public to seek their votes, the people of Wayanad followed the political tradition of supporting the Congress. Right from the start of counting of votes, beginning with the postal ballots, Priyanka was clearly in the lead which kept getting bigger as the counting progressed. As she gained a huge lead over her rivals, leaders of the Congress and its ally, the IUML, predicted a significant victory for her. They also predicted that she would cross the lead achieved by her brother, Rahul Gandhi, in the LS polls held in April in Wayanad. Rahul, in the 2024 LS polls in Wayanad, had got 6,47,445 votes to win with a victory margin of 3,64,422 votes. Priyanka’s husband, Robert Vadra, told reporters in Delhi that his wife was “breaking all records and the trends show the love and affection she has received from the people of Wayanad. Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said here on Saturday that from being led, India is today in a position to lead others across the world and this is amply borne out by recent success stories accomplished under Prime Minister Narendra Modi including Space sector headway, Biotechnology Vaccine breakthroughs and CSIR Purple Revolution. He was addressing the 8th convocation of Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research, possibly the only one of its kind in India. On the occasion, he presented Doctor of Science degrees to four renowned scientists – Dr Raghunath A Mashelkar, Prof Samir K Brahmachari, Prof Suresh Bhargava and Dr Thirumalachari Ramasami, during the 8th convocation of the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), recognizing their groundbreaking contributions to science and technology. A celebrated figure in polymer science and engineering, Dr Mashelkar was honoured for his pioneering research and exceptional leadership. Recognized as a trailblazer in genomics, Prof Brahmachari was awarded for his work on repetitive DNA’s role in health and disease. Prof Bhargava received the honour for his groundbreaking contributions to chemical sciences and engineering. Dr Ramasami was lauded for his seminal research in chromium chemistry, which has led to innovative products and processes in academia and industry. Advertisement Addressing graduating scholars, Dr Singh highlighted AcSIR’s role in fostering interdisciplinary learning, promoting industry-academia collaboration, and driving India’s ascent in global science and technology rankings. The Minister called the institution’s futuristic academic approach a cornerstone for achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a “Viksit Bharat 2047.” The Minister commended AcSIR for ranking among the top 3% of global universities despite being a relatively young institution. He attributed this success to its innovative model, which blends diverse disciplines such as engineering, biosciences, and information sciences with emerging fields like medical research and agriculture. “AcSIR is not just an academic institution; it’s a torchbearer of a new academic culture in India,” he said, adding that its partnerships with 82 institutions, including CSIR, ICMR, and DST, exemplify effective collaboration in research and development. The Minister highlighted AcSIR’s role in promoting India’s burgeoning startup culture, particularly through its innovative Integrated PhD (iPhD) program. “iPhD links innovation, imagination, and industry right from the start of research journeys, ensuring sustainable startups,” he said. He tied these efforts to India’s meteoric rise in the global innovation ecosystem, moving from 81st to 40th in the Global Innovation Index under the Modi government. Dr Jitendra Singh also spotlighted success stories in emerging areas like space and biotechnology. India has progressed from a single-digit count of space startups to over 300, while the biotechnology sector now boasts nearly 9,000 startups, contributing significantly to the country’s economy. He celebrated the accomplishments of women in science, noting the historic appointment of CSIR’s first woman Director General. “India’s woman power has always been the foundation of great achievements, but it is now receiving the recognition it deserves,” the Minister stated. The event witnessed the participation of eminent dignitaries, including Prof Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Advisor, Government of India; Prof N Kalaiselvi, Director General, CSIR & Secretary, DSIR; Prof Rajiv Bahl, Director General, ICMR and Secretary, DHR and Prof P Balaram, Chancellor, AcSIR, who presided over the ceremony. When it comes to taxes, the Canadian investor has no better friend than a tax-free savings account (TFSA). Letting you shelter your gains and dividends from taxation, while inside the account on withdrawal, the TFSA can boost your after-tax returns. That’s not to say that TFSAs are always completely tax-free however. You do pay withholding taxes on foreign dividend stocks in a TFSA, for example. Additionally, there are specific scenarios where you can end up paying taxes to the CRA – specifically when you violate the TFSA account rules. In this article, I will explore three TFSA red flags that the CRA is keeping a close eye on, that you should never allow yourself to be exposed to. Excessive contributions Contributing is the most obvious TFSA red flag that the CRA keeps a close watch on. Every investor has accumulated a certain amount of contribution room. The formula is amount of room added in each year in which you were eligible to open an account, minus past contributions. If you contribute more than this amount, then you could wind up getting taxed for excessive contributions. A common TFSA contribution room misconception is that total contribution room is the same for everybody. The mistake people make here is conflating the amount of contribution room accumulated since the TFSA launched, with contribution room. Only those who were 18 or older in 2009 get the TFSA program’s lifetime accumulated amount, which is $102,000 for 2025. If you were 17 or younger in 2009, you have less lifetime accumulated room than that. Unapproved investments A second ‘red flag’ category the CRA keeps a close eye on is unapproved investments. There are a few of these, most of them involving holding shares in a company you control in a TFSA. If you create securities representing ownership in your small business and deposit them into your TFSA, you will be taxed. The CRA does not regard such shareholdings as investments but as business assets. Fortunately, 90% of Canadians are not at risk of ever falling into the unapproved investment trap. If you’re a business owner, you might want to keep it in mind. Day trading Last but not least, we have full-time day trading. If you day trade full time and realize huge profits by doing so, the CRA will tax you as a business, even if you conducted your trades in a TFSA. There is a bit of a grey area when it comes to defining day trading, but suffice it to say, if you trade full time, earn a full-time living, and use specialized software in your trading, the CRA will probably consider you a business. It’s better to hold in your TFSA long term than to day trade in it. Such funds are usually considered legitimate TFSA holdings. Consider ( ), for example. It’s a Canadian index fund built on U.S. stocks. Specifically, it is built on the S&P 500, the world’s most followed stock market index. The fund has 500 or so stocks, which provide it with considerable diversification. It has a low management fee (0.08%), which means it is fairly cheap. A nine-game winning streak helped the Eagles (11-2) clinch their fourth consecutive playoff berth. They’re seeking an NFC East title and still have a chance at catching Detroit (12-1) for the NFC’s No. 1 seed. But an ugly win over Carolina in which Jalen Hurts only threw 21 passes for 108 yards left wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith in a bad mood. He made it clear the offense, specifically the passing attack, wasn’t playing up to standard. He’s right. Hurts has thrown for fewer than 200 yards in three straight games. But Saquon Barkley is running at a record-setting pace so the Eagles haven’t had to rely on Hurts throwing to Brown and Smith as much as they have in the past. Brown caught four passes on four targets for 43 yards while Smith had four catches on six targets for 37 yards and one touchdown against the Panthers. People are also reading... That led to Brown bluntly responding “passing” when asked by a reporter after the game what needs improvement. Veteran leader Brandon Graham added fuel to the drama on his radio show Monday night by implying there’s friction between Brown and Hurts. The two were close friends long before they became teammates and Hurts is the godfather for Brown’s daughter. “The person that’s complaining (needs) to be accountable,” Graham said of Brown. “I’m just being honest. ... Like and he (knows) this. I don’t know the whole story, but I know that (Hurts) is trying. And I mean, (Brown) could be a little better with how he responds to things and they were friends before this. It’s like, man, but things have changed, and I understand that because life happens, but we gotta — it’s the business side that we have to make sure that we don’t let the personal get in the way of the business and that’s what we gotta do better at right now because we know it’s the issue. “Everybody is saying some things, but we need to be able to talk things out as men, you know what I’m saying? But, we need to let personal stuff go and let’s get right for this game because man, it’s like most of the time it’s just a conversation that just (needs) to be had, but the person with the problem (has) to want to talk to the person other than others. That’s all I’m saying." Graham, who is sidelined with a triceps injury, clarified his comments later to an ESPN reporter, saying he made the wrong assumption about the relationship between Hurts and Brown and planned to apologize to both players. But the damage was done. Or was it? While social media ran wild with news there’s more trouble in Philadelphia, the Eagles have been here before. They fell apart last year after a 10-1 start, dropping six of their final seven games, including a lopsided loss in the playoffs to Tampa Bay. There were questions about Hurts’ leadership, his relationship to teammates and the team’s locker room dynamic. Plus, coach Nick Sirianni was harshly criticized for the team’s failures. They overcame a tumultuous offseason and are 11-2 and in position to make a Super Bowl run. All they have to do is get along, put the team first and focus on the overall goal of winning a championship instead of pouting about individual statistics. One breakout passing game can change everything. Belichick’s future Bill Belichick can’t break Don Shula’s all-time NFL wins record coaching in college. Whether his interest in the vacancy at the University of North Carolina is genuine or not, it doesn’t change the fact that he has to return to the NFL to become the winningest coach in league history. The biggest question is whether he’ll get that opportunity. Belichick only interviewed with Atlanta out of eight coaching vacancies last season. Belichick, who led the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl titles with Tom Brady, needs to win 27 more games to break Shula’s record for most regular-season victories. He’s 15 wins away from passing Shula for all-time victories, including the postseason. The 72-year-old Belichick explained on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show,” how he would approach a college job. “If I was in a college program, the college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for the players that had the ability to play in the NFL,” Belichick said. “It would be a professional program: training, nutrition, scheme, coaching, techniques that would transfer to the NFL. It would be an NFL program at a college level.” Belichick pointed out the NIL and transfer portal have made college football more like pro football. It makes sense for Belichick to explore all of his options and talk to every team that’s interested. North Carolina could end up being his best opportunity to return to coaching, even if he can’t add those wins to his NFL resume. Be the first to know Get local news delivered to your inbox!
