On International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women , President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted that her government is implementing a range of “actions” and making various law changes in favor of gender equality and the protection and strengthening of women’s rights. Speaking at her Monday morning press conference, Sheinbaum also said that her administration is committed to “eradicating” violence against women. The two main tenets of the government’s strategy are “prevention” of violence against women and “zero impunity” for crimes committed, she said. “In the face of any femicide: zero impunity. In the face of sexual violence against women: zero impunity,” Sheinbaum said. Sheinbaum told her morning presser that the government’s women’s rights pamphlet is currently being drawn up and will be unveiled soon. “The pamphlet has to do with the rights enshrined in the constitution, in laws,” she said, adding that it will explain “what equality means” and expose societal prejudices that have an adverse impact on equality. Sheinbaum spoke about some prejudices that remain prevalent in Mexico, such as that women and girls should clear the table at meal times and do the dishes. “Contributing to household chores is a task for everyone,” she said. Sheinbaum also said there is no reason why girls can’t play with cars and marbles and boys can’t play with dolls. “Something as simple” as telling a girl she can’t play with cars can have an impact on her future life, the president said. “Saying ‘you can’t play with this’ or ‘you can’t play with marbles’ ... limits the dreams a girl can have,” she said. Sheinbaum said last month that the government’s women’s rights pamphlet should be distributed to men as well as women because everyone needs to know about women’s rights. One reporter asked Sheinbaum about the impact her ascension to Mexico’s top political position has had on the country. At the conclusion of her question, the journalist noted that a young girl in Chiapas impersonated Mexico’s first female president, or presidenta , at a Revolution Day parade last week. (A video of the girl’s performance went viral on social media.) “Las niñas incorporan a su discurso la nueva visión de la importancia de las mujeres en la vida pública”, resaltó la presidenta @Claudiashein sobre video grabado durante un desfile de la Revolución mexicana en Chiapas. pic.twitter.com/eVe1FMxzyO — Gobierno de México (@GobiernoMX) November 22, 2024 A female president “is a symbol that transforms mindsets,” Sheinbaum said. “It’s not enough [just] with the symbol, we have to develop policy, change the constitution , change legislation and develop actions for the protection and promotion of women’s rights,” she said. “But ... [a female president] is a symbol, when a girl sees a presidenta obviously she can imagine that she too can be a presidenta ,” Sheinbaum said. “... And that represents a change in mindset, and not just in girls, in boys as well, in men as well, it’s a cultural transformation,” she said. Sheinbaum noted that she will attend Rocío Nahle’s inauguration as governor of Veracruz this Sunday. Nahle, federal energy minister during most of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s six-year term, is “a woman of character with many convictions, who loves Veracruz, who loves its people,” the president said. “And I know that she will do a great job. And we’ll be there supporting her with everything she needs,” Sheinbaum said. She also highlighted that the incoming governor, while energy minister “was able to build a refinery” — the new Pemex facility on the Gulf coast of Tabasco . Nahle, a native of the state of Zacatecas, was the ruling Morena party’s candidate in the June 2 gubernatorial election in Veracruz, and won the contest easily with close to 60% of the vote . City Beautiful appears to have got its traffic in order, if the number of licence suspensions over the past three years is taken as an indication. Sample this: the driving licence suspensions reduced by half (50%) this year from 689 in 2023 to 352 in 2024. In 2022, the figure was even higher at 1,139. The dip coincides with the launch and implementation of the Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) in March 2022. Senior superintendent of police (SSP, traffic) Sumer Pratap Singh said, “The latest technology has made people wary of breaking the law. Also, most violators challaned were from outside the city.” There are 225 (ITMS) cameras installed at 47 junctions under Chandigarh Smart City Limited. These cameras take note of traffic violations, and a challan is generated on the registration number of the traffic violator. Riding a two-wheeler without a helmet and drunken driving were two violations that led to most driving licence suspensions in the city this year. This year, 225 licences were suspended for not wearing helmets, followed by 78 suspensions for drunken driving. There were 25 driving-licence suspensions for speeding, nine for use of mobile phone while driving, six for dangerous driving, five for triple riding and two for jumping the red light. Section 19 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, read with Rule 21 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, recommends the suspension of driving licences for up to six months for violations such as the use of mobile phones while driving, speeding, drunk driving and jumping the red light. For riding without a helmet, the licence is suspended for three months, and a fine is imposed. The traffic police had started suspending licences for speeding in 2016 on the directions of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety. The committee had issued directions to suspend the driving licence on the first offence. However, as per the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, the licence is to be suspended after the second violation.Trump asks Supreme Court to delay TikTok ban so he can weigh in after he takes officeThe Fine Line Between Ideology and Crime: Understanding the True Purpose of Dragon Ransomware – The Interview

NEW DELHI: Japanese imaging and optical products major Canon believes that it has a good opportunity in India for its semiconductor lithography equipment required for chip fabrication, and it is in negotiations with companies setting up facilities here, said its India President and CEO Toshiaki Nomura. Quantum computing is emerging as a game-changing technology poised to revolutionize industries, much like how artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed the digital landscape . As we head toward 2025, experts predict that quantum computing will be the next major frontier in tech, unlocking unprecedented computational power and driving breakthroughs in fields such as cryptography, drug discovery, and optimization. At the heart of quantum computing's potential is the quantum bit, or qubit , which can represent multiple states simultaneously, allowing quantum computers to process data exponentially faster than classical computers. In fact, recent advancements have already shown the immense promise of this technology. For example, Alphabet Inc.’s GOOG GOOGL Quantum AI division, led by Hartmut Neven , recently unveiled its latest quantum chip, Willow . This chip reduces errors exponentially and completed a benchmark computation in under five minutes—an operation that would have taken one of the fastest supercomputers 10^25 years to finish. The rise of quantum computing presents a compelling complement to AI, as it has the potential to enhance AI models and algorithms, helping unlock entirely new frontiers in science and technology. As this technology advances, it could usher in a new wave of innovation, particularly in industries reliant on complex data processing and problem-solving. US and French Presidents, Biden and Macron, may soon announce a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel, as disclosed by Lebanese sources. Meanwhile, Washington's assurance of progress remains firm, though, according to spokesperson John Kirby, finalization is pending. In Romania, nationalist candidate Calin Georgescu stunned the political landscape with his first-round success, challenging the NATO-aligned perspective. Georgescu will face opposition runner-up Elena Lasconi in a run-off electing Romania's new president. Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, faces heavy drone strikes from Russia, claimed Mayor Vitali Klitschko. As unmanned aerial vehicles assaulted various parts of the city, air defenses mobilized to intercept the threats. (With inputs from agencies.)NEW DELHI: With the IAF grappling with an acute shortage of fighter aircraft as well as force-multipliers, the govt has constituted a high-level committee under defence secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh to chalk out a roadmap to plug the major operational gaps in the force. The committee will examine the IAF's overall capability development through several indigenous design and development as well as direct acquisition projects. "Among the three Services, IAF has the most critical capability voids. The committee will submit its report by the end of Jan," a source said. DRDO chief Samir V Kamat, secretary (defence production) Sanjeev Kumar and IAF deputy chief Air Marshal Tejinder Singh, among others, are the members of the committee. The need to fast-track projects has been reinforced by the way the Chinese air force has deployed additional fighters, bombers, reconnaissance aircraft and drones at all its air-bases facing India, like Hotan, Kashgar, Gargunsa, Shigatse, Bangda, Nyingchi and Hoping, after upgrading them with new runways, hardened shelters, fuel and ammunition sto-rage facilities. With the IAF currently making do with just 30 fighter squadrons when 42.5 are authorised to tackle the threat from China and Pakistan, one of the major challenges before the committee will be to break the logjam over the long-pending project to manufacture 114 new 4.5-generation fighters, at an initial estimate of Rs 1.25 lakh crore, with foreign collaboration. "Some jets will be directly acquired, while the bulk will be produced in India," a source said. Then, there is also the induction of indigenous Tejas Mark-1A fighters, which has taken a hit primarily because of the continuing delay in supply of engines by US major General Electric. Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) will be able to deliver only two to three Tejas Mark-1A fighters instead of 16 promised to the IAF in the 2024-25 fiscal, under the Rs 46,898 crore deal for 83 such single-engine jets inked in Feb 2021. The order for another 97 TejasMark-1A fighters for Rs 67,000 crore is also in the pipeline. Meanwhile, GE has promised to begin the deliveries of the contracted 99 GE-F404 turbofan jet engines by March 2025 now, around two years behind schedule. HAL and GE, of course, are now also conducting the final techno-commercial negotiations for co-production of the more powerful GE-F414 aero-engines in India for the planned induction of at least 108 Tejas Mark-II fighters, with 80% transfer of technology for around $1 billion. Induction of force-multipliers is also crucial. IAF, for instance, has just six IL-78 mid-air refuelers, inducted in 2003-04, when it requires at least 18 such aircraft to extend the operational range of its fighter jets. In the "eyes in the sky" arena, India is even behind Pakistan, let alone China. IAF has just three indigenous 'Netra' airborne early-warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, apart from the three Israeli Phalcon AWACS inducted in 2009-11. Consequently, the plan to develop six Mark-1A and six Mark-2 versions of the Netra aircraft also needs to be fast-tracked. Stay updated with the latest news on Times of India .
